To TV or not to TV...

This question came up on my online mommy group. TVs in your kids' bedrooms...yes or no? What if they go to sleep easier with a TV on? What if it's to relax and unwind and then go to sleep?

My two cents...
No, no, no. Not for any reason, ever. There have been countless studies that have proven how electronic usage (including watching TV) right before bed has negative effects on proper, restorative sleep. TV is a stimulant and interferes with your body's natural tendency to slow down and prepare for sleep. These early years especially, I'm trying to form healthy and positive sleep associations.

So, if you said no to my question, do YOU have a TV in your room? Why or why not? We're a no, no, no, on that one too. I think the bedroom should be for sleeping, talking, reading and ummm...(!).  I find if I watch a movie on the laptop in bed, I sleep horribly. If I'm texting on my phone right up until I turn off the lights, I sleep horribly.  Studies have shown that our brains continue trying to process what we were just exposed to electronically. So, our bedroom is the oasis.

Curious to hear what you think!

Most definitely not for the kids rooms. I had one as a kid, and fell asleep to it, and had to fall asleep to one until I was 25 or so. Seriously. We don't have one in our bedroom now either. If it was only up to me we would, but Peter didn't want to and I decided to give it a try in the new house. It's been a year without one in our bedroom and I don't miss it!

I definitely agree with you. Especially for children. Our kids do not and will not have TV's in their rooms.

As for us? Well, that's another story. I'd be fine without one, but Simon totally wouldn't. haha.

Absolutely not for kids. Heck, mine doesn't even watch tv during the day, so she's certainly not going to be allowed unrestricted access to fall asleep!

Sometimes I wouldn't mind one in the bedroom, mostly for those times that I want to watch the end of the game or something all snuggled up instead of in our basement. However, right now we're electronics-free in the bedroom, no cell phone, laptop, tv, tablet, ever. I think we'll keep it that way to set a good example.

Definitely not in the kids rooms. I grew up with only one tv in the house - in the living room. We have a tv in our bedroom because it was given to us, but it's rarely used.

I can't speak for kids, but even for myself I don't sleep well when I'm on my laptop right before bed, it doesn't really stop me but I can vouch for all those studies.

hugo will never get a tv in his room. i am so against that.
shameful face... we have a tv in our room.
not sure if it even works. it hasn't been plugged in for over a year and hasn't been used for probably at least 2 years. its an ancient tube tv that even if fernando wanted to watch something he wouldn't be able to lower himself to not watch it in fancy pants HD. the only thing i ever used it for was listing to the music stations anyways so i didn't care that it whas ghetto. i should totally drop it off at goodwill. or wherever might take the poor little dinosaur tv!

Love this post! We are a no to tv's in the room family as well. It drives me INSANE when my kids' friends have tvs in their rooms. We have had kiddos spend the night here and can't handle falling asleep without a tv.

C and I had a tv in our room for the first couple years we were married and then said enough. We will never go back. I think the bedroom should be used for it's purpose.
